Sensor self-installation guide

Learn how to set up and install sensors purchased from SafetyCulture.

What are sensors?

With sensors in SafetyCulture, you can monitor your assets in real-time 24/7, receive alerts when things go out of critical range, and record business-critical data automatically. This empowers you to stay compliant, prevent asset loss, and make informed decisions based on historical sensor data trends.

If you're an existing sensors customer interested in purchasing additional gateways and sensors, please reach out to your dedicated customer success manager. Otherwise, get in touch if you're interested in purchasing sensors and gateways from us or finding out more about our sensor solutions.

What you'll need

Take note

  • We recommend that you set aside 10 to 15 minutes to complete the self-installation. Make sure you follow each step carefully, and if you get stuck at any time, review the troubleshooting section at the end of this guide.

  • A sensor name allows up to 40 characters.

  • If you're already tracking conditions and want to integrate with SafetyCulture, learn more about connecting existing sensor solutions.

  • SafetyCulture will prompt you to create or select a location for each sensor you add during setup. Keep in mind sensor locations are currently separate from the sites used in other areas of SafetyCulture, such as Inspections and Actions.

1. Add your gateway

If you've already added a gateway for your sensors, skip to the "3. Add your sensor" section.

  1. Log in to the web app.

  2. Select Sensors from the menu on the left-hand side.

  3. Click Plus iconAdd sensor or weather on the upper-right of the page.

  4. Select Other brands under "Sensors purchased from SafetyCulture".

  5. Select Gateway.

  6. Enter your gateway's "ID code" and click Next. You only need to enter the number after "eui-" on your gateway.

  7. Connect your gateway to a power outlet and ensure the outlet is turned on.

  8. Click Next. It may take up to five minutes to add the gateway.

  9. Once the gateway is successfully added, click Add sensor to add a sensor or click Continue to dashboard to return to the Sensors page.

  10. Once the gateway is successfully added, tap Add sensor to add a sensor or tap Continue to dashboard to return to the Sensors page.

2. Place your gateway

Once you've added the gateway to your account, you can place the gateway. Find a location within approximately 50m/160ft of where you will be placing your sensors. Ensure your chosen location has strong cellular reception. You can check cellular reception with your mobile phone.

The gateway is not required to be mounted, but should you choose to do so, make sure it's still within range of your sensors and is in an area with strong cellular reception.

  1. Use a dry cloth to clean and thoroughly dry the surface where you want to mount the gateway.

  2. Peel off the protective layer from the tape on the back of the gateway.

  3. Firmly place the gateway against the surface and hold for thirty seconds to ensure the tape sticks.

  4. Make sure the antennae are pointing away from any obstructions. Pointing them up into the air is normally a good option.

4. Install your sensor

Once you've added the sensor to your account, you can install the sensor. Where you place your sensor all depends on what type of area you want to monitor. However, we recommend that you take note of the following best practices:

  • Avoid placing your sensor near doors or in any area of direct airflow.

  • Place your sensor in a central area, not too high and not too low.

  • Position your sensor in an area out of the way to avoid any accidental damage.

Our sensors can be installed with either double-sided tapes or cable ties. Both are included with your sensors. We recommend using tape for smooth and dry surfaces and cable ties for moist or low-temperature areas.

If your sensor has an external probe, make sure the probe is not in contact with any surfaces at its installed area.

  1. Use a dry cloth to clean and thoroughly dry the surface where you want to install the sensor.

  2. Remove the backing off one side of the tape and apply the tape to recess at the back of the sensor, then hold for thirty seconds.

  3. Remove the remaining backing from the tape and firmly place the sensor against the surface for thirty seconds to ensure the tape sticks.

If you need to install your sensor in areas with rough or unstable surfaces, you also have the option to install with screws. We recommend screws that are countersunk flat-head with a diameter of 4mm or 5/32". Keep in mind that screws are not provided with the sensors.

Gateway troubleshooting

The ID code should be on the sticker placed at the top of your gateway's body. If the sticker is not visible or illegible due to damage or other reasons, please contact our customer support team for assistance.

Ensure you've entered the ID code of your gateway, not your sensor. Then double-check the numbers.

Try turning the sensor off, wait for thirty seconds before turning it back on, and then try adding the sensor again.

If you continue to experience this problem, please check the following and try adding the sensor again:

  • Make sure the sensor is powered on.

  • Make sure the sensor is within 300m/1000ft of the gateway. Obstructions, such as concrete walls and steel between the gateway and the sensor, may impact the signal strength. Try moving the sensor and gateway closer together to see if they're able to connect.

If the answers still don't address your questions, please contact our customer support team for assistance. If you have feedback about the Actions feature, please let us know by submitting your feedback.
