Manage Spaced Repetition quizzes

Learn about Spaced Repetition, how to enable or disable it for your organization, and how to manage Spaced Repetition questions via the web app.

How does Spaced Repetition work?

Spaced Repetition is a feature in SafetyCulture Training that helps your team retain important knowledge through short, personalized quizzes. These quizzes are automatically sent 24 hours after a team member answers a question from a course you’ve selected for Spaced Repetition. The goal is to strengthen memory by reviewing information just before it’s likely to be forgotten.

The timing of each quiz is based on the SM-2 algorithm. If a team member answers a question incorrectly, they'll see it more often. As they continue to answer correctly, the question will appear less frequently, helping them build long-term retention. The table outlines how the interval between repetitions increases with each correct answer:

No. of the times a questions is answered correctly in a row

Frequently asked questions

Your team will start receiving Spaced Repetition quizzes 24 hours after they answer a question from a course you’ve selected for Spaced Repetition.

Spaced Repetition quizzes include a mix of new questions and ones the user previously answered incorrectly. These come from the questions you’ve selected for Spaced Repetition in each course. As users answer more questions, either in the same course or in other Spaced Repetition-enabled courses, new questions are gradually added to their quizzes.

Spaced Repetition only sends quizzes when questions are due for reinforcement. If a user has consistently answered most of their questions correctly, and there are only a few questions assigned, they may go several weeks, or even months, without receiving a new quiz.

This is expected behavior and indicates that the user is retaining the information well. The better their performance, the longer the spacing between quizzes.

No, Spaced Repetition scores don't count towards leaderboards.
